NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed former UP Shia Central Waqf Board chief Waseem Rizwi’s plea for deletion of 26 verses from the holy Quran and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on him for filing an “absolutely frivolous” petition.
A bench of Justices RF Nariman, BR Gavai and Hrishikesh Roy indicated that it was not inclined to entertain his petition and asked Rizwi’s lawyer if he still wanted to argue. As the advocate persisted with his submission and pleaded the court that Centre and Madarsa Board be asked to file response for imparting teachings from Quran which allegedly promoted violence and terrorism.
“Are you serious about the petition and do you want to still press for petition,” the bench asked advocate RK Raizada, immediately after the case came up for hearing. He said he was pressing for the direction on issue of teaching of a wrong version which exhorted for violence in government-recognised madrasas.
