NEW DELHI: Congress “condemned” PM Narendra Modi’s remarks in Rajya Sabha, saying he had denigrated the farmers’ movement with his choice of words and disappointed the country which was expecting him to provide a resolution in the form of repeal of the three farm laws.
Congress leaders and Rajya Sabha MPs Mallikarjun Kharge and Shaktisinh Gohil said Modi’s comments in the House suggested that what the government had done on the farm laws was justified and all others protesting against the laws were “fools”. They said at least 20% of India’s farmers were graduates who understood policies.
“We expected the PM to announce repeal of the three farm laws. The government could later consult all stakeholders and bring a changed law,” Kharge said. Speaking in Lok Sabha, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the “desecration” of Red Fort on January 26 was orchestrated by the government to break up the farmers’ protests and should be investigated by a joint Parliamentary committee. “This was a well thought out, pre-planned conspiracy to break up the farmers’ movement. The fact is that you have sent some vandals to the Red Fort to create vandalism. Forces within the government are behind it,” he said.
