NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Justice N V Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India on Tuesday.
Senior-most Supreme Court judge Justice NV Ramana will take oth as the 48th Chief Justice of India on April 24.
The warrant of appointment as CJI, with effect from April 24, was handed over to Justice Ramana by department of justice.
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, The President is pleased to appoint Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief justice of India with effect from April 24,” the Centre said in official notification.
Chief Justice of India Justice SA Bobde had recommended Ramana as his successor in keeping with convention and norms of seniority.
Justice Bobde, who is due to retire on April 23, has sent the recommendation to the Law and Justice Ministry, and handed over a copy to Justice Ramana.
